No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.

The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public works. They were built at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
