British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
